Luteinizing hormone (LH), a glycoprotein hormone of the gonadotropin family also known as interstitial cell-stimulating hormone (ICSH), is a macromolecular glycoprotein secreted by the pituitary gland. It consists of α and β subunits, with the β subunit possessing a unique structure. In women, a small amount of LH is present at baseline; however, its secretion surges rapidly around the middle of the menstrual cycle, creating the ‘LH peak’ that induces ovulation. This peak is therefore used as an auxiliary marker for ovulation detection.
