Epidemiology
Monkeypox (MPX) is an acute zoonotic illness resulting from infection with the Monkeypox Virus (MPXV). MPXV is a double-stranded DNA virus, roughly brick- or oval-shaped, with a genome length of about 197 kilobases. Transmission primarily occurs via animals, and people can become infected through bites from infected animals or direct contact with their blood, body fluids, or rash lesions. The virus can also spread between humans, mainly through respiratory droplets during prolonged close face-to-face contact, or by touching a patient’s bodily fluids or contaminated items. The clinical picture in humans resembles smallpox, featuring fever, headache, muscle and back pain, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, and general discomfort after a 12-day incubation period. A rash appears 1 to 3 days after fever onset, typically beginning on the face but may appear elsewhere. The illness usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks, with a case-fatality rate of 1% to 10%. Lymphadenopathy is a key feature that distinguishes monkeypox from smallpox.
The kit simultaneously detects IgM and IgG antibodies against monkeypox virus in a sample. A positive IgM result indicates that the individual is currently in the infection phase, while a positive IgG result suggests a past infection or a recovery stage.
