Epidemiology

Malaria, often shortened to Mal, arises from single-celled eukaryotic Plasmodium parasites, specifically P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae Laveran, and P. ovale Stephens. Transmitted by mosquitoes and through blood, this parasitic disease poses a serious risk to human health. Among the Plasmodium species infecting humans, P. falciparum is the most lethal, predominantly found in sub-Saharan Africa, where it causes the majority of malaria deaths worldwide. Outside sub-Saharan Africa, P. vivax is the most common species.
