Epidemiology

Influenza virus, a member of the Orthomyxoviridae family, poses a significant threat to human health due to its wide host range. Seasonal influenza epidemics affect approximately 600 million people globally each year, leading to 250,000–500,000 deaths, with influenza B virus being a major contributor[1]. Influenza B virus (IVB) possesses a single-stranded, negative-sense RNA genome. Based on the nucleotide sequence of its antigenic HA1 region, it is classified into two main lineages, represented by the strains B/Yamagata/16/88 and B/Victoria/2/87[2]. IVB exhibits strong host specificity, naturally infecting only humans and seals, and while it does not cause global pandemics, it can trigger regional seasonal outbreaks[3]. Transmission can occur via the digestive tract, respiratory tract, damaged skin, and conjunctiva. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, and muscle pain, often accompanied by severe pneumonia and cardiac complications. In severe cases, failure of organs such as the heart and kidneys may lead to death, with a very high fatality rate[4]. Therefore, a simple, accurate, and rapid method for detecting influenza B virus is urgently needed to guide clinical treatment and diagnosis.
