Epidemiology

Monkeypox (MPX) is an acute zoonotic disease resulting from infection with the Monkeypox Virus (MPXV), a double-stranded DNA virus roughly 197Kb in size, with a rounded brick-like or oval shape. Transmission to humans typically occurs through animal bites or direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or rash of infected animals. Person-to-person transmission happens primarily via respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face contact, or through direct contact with a patient’s body fluids or contaminated items. The clinical presentation is similar to smallpox, with a 12-day incubation period followed by fever, headache, myalgia, back pain, lymphadenopathy, fatigue, and discomfort. Rash appears 1–3 days after fever, often beginning on the face and spreading elsewhere. The illness lasts 2–4 weeks, and the mortality rate ranges from 1% to 10%. Lymphadenopathy is a major clinical distinction from smallpox.

Results from this kit should not be relied upon as the sole basis for diagnosing monkeypox virus infection. A definitive diagnosis requires integration of the patient’s clinical presentation and additional laboratory findings to ensure accurate pathogen identification and to guide the development of a safe and effective treatment plan.
