Epidemiology

Rotavirus (Rv), a double-stranded RNA virus of the reovirus family, is a significant cause of viral diarrhea and enteritis in infants globally. Group A rotavirus is the primary agent of severe diarrhea in infants and young children. The virus is shed in feces and transmitted via the fecal-oral route. It infects the duodenal mucosal cells, impairing the normal intestinal absorption of salts, sugars, and water, which leads to diarrhea.

Adenovirus (Adv), from the Adenoviridae family, includes types 40 and 41 of Group F, which are capable of causing diarrhea in infants. These types represent the second most significant viral cause of diarrhea in children, after rotavirus. Adenovirus is primarily spread through the fecal-oral route, with an incubation period of approximately 10 days. The predominant symptom is diarrhea, often accompanied by vomiting and fever.
