Epidemiology
Fecal occult blood refers to small amounts of GI bleeding, where red blood cells are broken down and the stool looks normal, making bleeding invisible to the eye or microscope. A fecal occult blood test is the only way to detect it. Transferrin, which is present in plasma and almost absent in healthy stool, when found in fecal or GI samples, signals gastrointestinal bleeding [1].
