Epidemiology

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is a prokaryotic organism that depends entirely on eukaryotic host cells for survival. It is classified into serotypes A through K. Genital tract infections are predominantly linked to serotypes D-K of the trachoma biovar. In men, these infections typically present as urethritis, which may resolve spontaneously but often becomes chronic with periodic flare-ups, and can be complicated by epididymitis or proctitis. Women may develop urethritis, cervicitis, or more severe conditions such as salpingitis. Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) occupies a unique niche as the smallest self-replicating prokaryote, bridging bacteria and viruses, and is a common cause of urogenital infections. In males, it can trigger prostatitis, urethritis, or pyelonephritis; in females, it provokes reproductive tract inflammation including vaginitis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. It is also recognized as a contributor to infertility and miscarriage. Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) is a fastidious, slow-growing sexually transmitted pathogen and the smallest known mycoplasma species [1]. With a genome of only 580 base pairs, it is responsible for non-gonococcal urethritis and epididymitis in men, and cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women, and has been linked to spontaneous abortion and preterm delivery.
