Epidemiology

Infections of the respiratory tract pose a serious global health threat. Research indicates that the majority of these infections result from co-infection by bacteria and/or viruses, which can worsen disease severity and increase mortality. Accurate pathogen identification therefore allows for targeted therapy and improved survival outcomes[1,2]. Conventional detection techniques—such as microscopic examination, bacterial culture, and immunological assays—are often laborious, time-consuming, technically challenging, and lack sensitivity. Moreover, they typically cannot identify multiple pathogens in a single sample, hindering precise diagnostic support for clinicians. Consequently, treatment frequently remains empirical, accelerating bacterial resistance and delaying appropriate patient care[3]. The following organisms are important causes of nosocomial respiratory infections: Haemophilus influenzae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Bordetella pertussis, Bordetella parapertussis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Legionella pneumophila[4,5]. This assay detects the specific nucleic acids of these pathogens in individuals presenting with respiratory infection signs and symptoms, and, when integrated with other laboratory findings, aids in the diagnosis of respiratory pathogen infections.

Work Flow

For sample extraction, a Type I viral DNA/RNA purification kit (compatible with automatic nucleic acid extraction systems) is recommended. All subsequent steps must be performed in strict accordance with the kit's instructions for use.
