Epidemiology
Mumps virus is antigenically uniform (single serotype), but the SH protein gene exhibits high variability across strains. Twelve genotypes are defined based on SH gene sequence differences: A, B, C, D, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, and N. Their geographic distribution shows distinct regional patterns—Europe predominantly sees genotypes A, C, D, G, and H; the Americas circulate C, D, G, H, J, and K; Asia harbors B, F, I, and L, with F dominant in China, B in Japan, and I in South Korea. It is unclear whether this SH-based typing has implications for vaccine development. The live attenuated vaccine strains used globally are mainly genotype A, and antibodies raised against different genotype antigens are cross-protective.
Work Flow
Nucleic acid extraction employs two versions of the Viral DNA/RNA Kit: one compatible with an Automatic Nucleic Acid Extractor, and another for alternative workflows. The extraction uses 200 μL of sample, with a recommended elution volume of 150 μL.
