Epidemiology
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, also known as the tubercle bacillus (TB), includes pathogenic types affecting humans: human, bovine, and African variants. Its ability to cause disease may stem from inflammation due to bacterial multiplication in tissue cells, toxic effects of bacterial components and metabolic products, and immune-mediated damage to bacterial constituents. Virulence factors are linked to capsules, lipids, and proteins.
The bacterium can enter a susceptible host via the respiratory tract, digestive tract, or skin breaks, leading to tuberculosis in various tissues and organs. Pulmonary tuberculosis, acquired through inhalation, is the most prevalent form. It often affects children, manifesting as low-grade fever, night sweats, and mild hemoptysis. Secondary infection typically presents with low-grade fever, night sweats, and hemoptysis; the disease tends to be chronic and long-lasting. Globally in 2018, an estimated 10 million individuals contracted Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and approximately 1.6 million died.
