Epidemiology
RSV is an RNA virus from the Paramyxoviridae family, primarily transmitted via respiratory droplets and close contact. It is the leading cause of lower respiratory tract infections in infants. Infected infants can develop severe bronchiolitis and pneumonia, conditions associated with childhood asthma. Common severe symptoms in infants include high fever, rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, and subsequently bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Some children may also experience complications such as otitis media, pleurisy, or myocarditis. In adults and older children, infection typically manifests as an upper respiratory tract illness.
Work Flow
A general DNA/RNA kit, compatible with an automatic nucleic acid extractor, is recommended for sample extraction. All subsequent steps must be performed exactly as described in the kit's instructions for use (IFU).
