Epidemiology

West Nile virus belongs to the Flaviviridae family, Flavivirus genus, grouping it with viruses such as Japanese encephalitis, dengue, yellow fever, St. Louis encephalitis, and hepatitis C. Recently, West Nile fever epidemics have emerged across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, now ranking as the most prevalent infectious disease in the United States. The virus cycles through avian reservoir hosts; humans acquire infection via bites from ornithophilic mosquitoes, primarily Culex species. Horses and other mammals also develop illness after being bitten by infected mosquitoes. Mild infections may cause flu-like signs like fever and headache, whereas severe cases can involve central nervous system complications or death [1–3]. With increasing global travel and migratory bird movements, the likelihood of West Nile fever introduction into China has risen [4].
