Epidemiology
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2) is an enveloped, circular virus with a capsid and core, containing double-stranded linear DNA. The virus enters the body through direct contact with skin or mucous membranes, often via sexual contact, and infections are classified as primary or recurrent. Genital tract infections are predominantly caused by HSV-2; in males, this typically presents as penile ulcers, while in females, lesions appear on the cervix, vulva, and vagina. Most initial genital herpes infections are asymptomatic, with only a minority showing mucosal or skin lesions. Genital herpes is characterized by lifelong persistence in the host with a tendency for frequent reactivation. Both individuals with symptoms and asymptomatic carriers can transmit the virus.
