Epidemiology

Adenoviruses are a major cause of respiratory infections and can also trigger gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis, cystitis, and exanthematous diseases. Respiratory symptoms initially resemble a common cold but may progress to pneumonia, pertussis-like laryngitis, and bronchitis. Immunocompromised individuals are especially susceptible to severe adenoviral complications. The virus spreads through direct contact, the fecal-oral pathway, and sometimes via water.
