Epidemiology
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a member of the Pneumoviridae family, within the Metapneumovirus genus. It is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA virus with an average diameter around 200 nm. Two genotypes, A and B, exist, which are further divided into four subtypes: A1, A2, B1, and B2. These subtypes commonly co-circulate, and there is no marked difference in transmissibility or pathogenicity among them. Infection with hMPV typically results in a mild, self-limiting illness. However, complications like bronchiolitis, pneumonia, acute COPD exacerbation, and acute bronchial asthma exacerbation may lead to hospitalization in some individuals. In immunocompromised patients, severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multiple organ dysfunction, or even death can occur.
