Epidemiology
Commonly known as the flu, influenza is an Orthomyxoviridae virus with a segmented negative-sense RNA genome. Classification into types A, B, and C is based on antigenic variations in nucleocapsid (NP) and matrix (M) proteins; a recently identified D type adds to this grouping. Types A and B are the predominant causes of human influenza, characterized by widespread transmission and high infectivity. Clinical presentation typically includes systemic symptoms such as high fever, fatigue, headache, cough, and generalized muscle aches, with relatively mild respiratory signs. The infection can be severe—even fatal—in young children, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Influenza A viruses mutate rapidly and are responsible for multiple global pandemics; they are further subtyped into 16 hemagglutinin (HA) and 9 neuraminidase (NA) variants based on antigenic properties. Influenza B mutates at a slower rate than A, yet still triggers localized outbreaks and seasonal epidemics.
