Epidemiology
Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a prevalent acute infectious illness among children, predominantly affecting those under five years old. It typically presents with herpetic lesions on the hands, feet, mouth, and other areas. A minority of cases may develop complications including myocarditis, pulmonary edema, and aseptic meningoencephalitis. In severe instances, rapid deterioration can occur, leading to death if prompt treatment is not administered.
To date, 108 enterovirus serotypes have been identified and classified into four groups: A, B, C, and D. While multiple enteroviruses can cause HFMD, enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CoxA16) are the most frequent. Beyond HFMD, these two viruses can also provoke serious central nervous system complications such as meningitis, encephalitis, and acute flaccid paralysis.
