Epidemiology

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a member of the Flaviviridae family; its genetic material is a single-stranded positive-sense RNA, prone to high mutation rates. The virus is found in hepatocytes, serum leukocytes, and plasma of infected individuals. Because HCV genes mutate readily, the virus is categorized into at least 6 genotypes and many subtypes. Treatment regimens and durations with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) vary by genotype. Consequently, prior to initiating DAA therapy, HCV genotyping is essential, and for genotype 1 infections, it is important to discriminate between subtypes 1a and 1b.
