Epidemiology

Acute viral hepatitis is primarily caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). HAV is a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Hepadnavirus genus of the Picornaviridae family. The virus is mainly transmitted via the fecal-oral route and resists heat, acids, and many organic solvents, allowing prolonged survival in shellfish, water, soil, and seabed sediments [1-3]. Infection occurs through ingestion of contaminated food or water, or by direct person-to-person contact. Foods often linked to HAV outbreaks include oysters, clams, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, dates, leafy greens, and semi-dried tomatoes [4‒6].

Work Flow

Serum samples

Option 1: Use the General DNA/RNA Kit () with the Automatic Nucleic Acid Extractor. Perform extraction following the kit instructions; the recommended elution volume is 80 µL.

Option 2: Use the TIANamp Virus DNA/RNA Kit (YDP315-R). Follow the protocol provided with the kit. Process a sample volume of 140 μL and elute in 60 μL.

Stool samples

Use the General DNA/RNA Kit () and the Automatic Nucleic Acid Extractor. Carry out extraction as directed by the instructions; the suggested elution volume is 80 µL.
