Epidemiology
Monkeypox (Mpox) is an acute zoonotic illness caused by the Monkeypox Virus (MPXV), a double-stranded DNA virus of approximately 197 kb that is round or oval in shape. Humans typically become infected through bites from infected animals or direct contact with infected animals' blood, body fluids, or skin lesions. Person-to-person transmission occurs primarily via respiratory droplets during extended close face-to-face contact, or through direct contact with a patient's body fluids or contaminated items. MPXV is divided into two distinct clades: Clade I (formerly the Central African or Congo Basin clade) and Clade II (formerly the West African clade). The Congo Basin clade is known to spread efficiently between humans and can be fatal, whereas the West African clade generally produces milder disease and exhibits lower human-to-human transmission.
Results from this kit are not intended to serve as the sole basis for diagnosing MPXV infection. They must be interpreted together with the patient's clinical presentation and other laboratory data to accurately assess the pathogen and develop a safe and effective treatment plan.
