Epidemiology

Mycoplasma hominis (MH) is a mycoplasma species dwelling in the urinary and genital tracts, where it can trigger urinary tract infections and genital inflammation. Widely found in nature, it is linked to various urogenital infections, including nongonococcal urethritis, cervicitis, adnexitis, and infertility. Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) is the smallest prokaryotic microorganism capable of independent life, occupying a niche between bacteria and viruses; it is also a pathogen that frequently causes reproductive and urinary tract infections. In men, it can produce prostatitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis; in women, it can induce inflammatory responses such as vaginitis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease, and it is counted among the agents of infertility and miscarriage. The most common form of vaginitis is bacterial vaginosis, and the key pathogen behind it is Gardnerella vaginalis (GV), an opportunistic microbe. When present in low abundance, GV is harmless; however, depletion of the dominant vaginal lactobacilli disrupts the vaginal environment, leading to massive overgrowth of GV and the onset of bacterial vaginosis. This imbalance also eases the invasion of other pathogens (like Candida, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Mycoplasma hominis), causing mixed vaginitis and cervicitis. If these conditions are not promptly and effectively diagnosed and treated, pathogens can ascend along the reproductive tract mucosa, resulting in upper genital tract infections such as endometritis, salpingitis, tubo-ovarian abscess, and pelvic peritonitis, with potential severe complications like infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
