Epidemiology

Syphilis is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection encountered in clinical settings, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum (TP) and leading to a chronic, systemic disease. Transmission primarily occurs via sexual contact, from mother to child, or through blood. Infected individuals are the sole reservoir, with the pathogen detectable in semen, breast milk, saliva, and blood. The illness progresses through three stages. Primary syphilis often presents with a hard chancre and regional lymphadenopathy in the groin, marking the period of highest contagiousness. Secondary syphilis is characterized by a widespread rash, fading of the chancre, and continued strong infectivity. Tertiary syphilis can involve complications such as bone involvement and neurosyphilis.
