Epidemiology

Yersinia pestis, the plague bacillus, multiplies swiftly and possesses high pathogenicity, affecting both rodents and humans. Infection occurs via three main pathways: skin contact – bacteria enter through breaks in the skin or mucous membranes when handling contaminated sputum, pus, animal hides, blood, meat, or flea excreta; ingestion – consuming infected animals; and inhalation – breathing in respiratory droplets or dust laden with bacteria, which can trigger widespread human outbreaks. Historically, plague has caused three devastating pandemics: the Plague of Justinian in the 6th century, the Black Death of the 14th century that claimed nearly one-third of Europe’s population, and a 19th-century epidemic that originated in Yunnan Province, China, swept through southern China, reached Hong Kong, and spread globally. Collectively, these events resulted in over 100 million fatalities.

Work Flow

A general DNA/RNA kit may be employed with the Automatic Nucleic Acid Extractor. Follow the instructions for use when performing extraction. An elution volume of 80 μL is suggested.
