Epidemiology

Dengue fever (DF) is a major arboviral disease caused by dengue virus (DENV) infection. DENV, a member of the Flavivirus genus within the Flaviviridae family, comprises four serotypes distinguished by surface antigens. The virus is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes and is most common in tropical and subtropical regions.

Typical symptoms of DENV infection include headache, fever, fatigue, lymphadenopathy, and leukopenia; severe cases may progress to hemorrhage, shock, liver damage, or death. Climate change, urbanization, and the rapid growth of tourism have accelerated the spread of DF, resulting in a continual expansion of its endemic areas.
