Epidemiology

Malaria (abbreviated Mal) is an infection caused by single-celled eukaryotic parasites of the genus Plasmodium, including Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium ovale. It is a mosquito-borne and blood-borne disease that severely impacts human health.

Among these species, Plasmodium falciparum is the most deadly. Incubation periods differ by species, with the shortest being 12–30 days and the longest extending to about one year. After the onset of paroxysm, symptoms like chills and fever emerge. Patients may develop anemia and an enlarged spleen; severe manifestations include coma, profound anemia, and acute renal failure, which can be fatal. Malaria occurs worldwide, predominantly in tropical and subtropical regions such as Africa, Central America, and South America.
