Epidemiology
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic, progressive inflammatory condition primarily targeting the spine, and can also affect the sacroiliac joints and peripheral joints to varying degrees. AS demonstrates pronounced familial clustering and a tight association with human leukocyte antigen HLA-B27. More than 70 HLA-B27 subtypes have been identified in humans, among which HLA-B*2702, HLA-B*2704, and HLA-B*2705 are the most frequently implicated in disease. In populations across China, Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan, the leading subtype is HLA-B*2704 (accounting for around 54%), followed by HLA-B*2705 (roughly 41%). This assay detects DNA from the HLA-B*2702, HLA-B*2704, and HLA-B*2705 subtypes but does not differentiate them from one another.
