Epidemiology
Scrub typhus is an acute febrile illness resulting from infection with Orientia tsutsugamushi, a Gram-negative obligate intracellular parasite. The organism is placed in the genus Orientia, family Rickettsiaceae, order Rickettsiales. Transmission occurs primarily through bites of chigger larvae harboring the pathogen. Clinical manifestations typically include sudden high fever, an eschar, lymphadenopathy, enlargement of the liver and spleen, and reduced peripheral white blood cell counts. In severe cases, the disease can lead to meningitis, hepatic and renal failure, systemic multi-organ failure, and even death.
Work Flow
A general DNA/RNA kit, suitable for use with an automatic nucleic acid extractor, is employed for extraction. The procedure should follow the kit's instructions. The input sample volume is 200 µL, and the suggested elution volume is 100 µL.
